Brit n’ Boer heads to Vieng Xai in Houaphanh province with a great guide on navigating the home of Lao independence.
Vieng Xai is located in Huaphanh Province in the east of Northern Laos. It is just 55km away from the Lao-Vietnam border crossing at Na Meo making this a popular stop over point for those travelling to or from Vietnam by land.
There is however another reason to visit this little town and that is for the caves. During the second Indo-China war the Pathet Lao, officers sheltered in these caves to avoid the nine-year bombing campaign by the US.
There is a Vieng Xai Caves visitors centre in town, and they run a very good tour through the caves. They provide you with an English speaking guide and an audio guide which is extremely detailed. The tour takes around 2.5 hours and during this time you will also get to see a little of the town as the caves are not all at the same location. If you have a motorbike you can drive yourself to the caves following the guide or you can rent a bicycle.
Brit n’ Boer Tips —————
Hike up Phou Nang Viewpoint for amazing 360 degree views of the town. Not for the faint hearted as the steps are very steep and have large gaps between them. Not for children or the elderly.
We can recommend a restaurant called Sabaidee Odisha. The owners are very helpful and friendly and the food is great.
