This famous river cave spans 7km in Phu Hin Bun National Park. The entrance to the cave is located in a village 45km south of Route 8 along the border between Khamouanne and Bolikhamxay provinces just south of Vientiane.
As you turn off the main road, follow a valley all the way to where the mountains meet. Here you find the village of Kong Lor and the entrance to the cave. The village is sleepy and has beautiful scenery looking out across the valley and up at the surrounding mountains it is well worth spending an extra night or two here to relax and enjoy village life.
The tour through the cave is such an incredible experience. You spend around 45 minutes passing through on a boat and a small section by foot. Once you reach the other side you can spend up to 3 hours exploring the nearby village before returning.
We highly recommend renting mountain bikes from the village and doing a little circular tour of the area. It took us about 40 minutes to complete the loop and we then enjoyed some drinks at a local stall before heading back through the cave with our boat driver. Once arriving back on the other side you can buy some fish food and feed the fish. Great fun and also helps plump those fish up so the locals can catch them later for dinner
Brit n’ Boer Tips ————
If you have not booked your accommodation ahead of time try to arrive in town before lunch so you have some options. Most people arrive into the town in the late afternoon and in high season it can be a bit difficult to find a bungalow and hammock with a good view.
We can highly recommend The Best One Restaurant! The owners are very friendly, the food portions are extremely generous and it has a lovely setting looking out over the tobacco plantations.
Bring your own good torch or headlamp for inside the cave. They provide you with ones free of charge but they are not very strong.
