A variety of transportation options allow you to reach Savannakhet Town from Vientiane and nearby provinces, as well as Thailand and Vietnam. Lao Airlines offers 5 weekly flights to Savannakhet departing Vientiane at 08:10 with a stop in Pakse. The carrier also offers direct flights from Bangkok. Six local/express busses depart daily from Vientiane’s Southern Bus Terminal to Savannakhet throughout the morning (LAK90,000), with a VIP sleeper bus leaving at 20:00 (LAK120,000). The trip takes about 8-9 hours. Busses are also available from Pakse and Khamouanne.

If you’re coming overland from Thailand, busses depart from the Mukdahan bus station throughout the day to Savannakhet Town. Busses are also available at the border for the ride over the bridge to Lao immigration. Coaches are occasionally available from various Vietnamese destinations, while the Lao Bao border has busses for the 5-hour trip to Savannakhet. Visas on arrival are available.

Tuk tuks are available in Savannakhet Town and at bus stations throughout the province to explore the various attractions. Sawng taews (Pickup trucks with benches) to outlying areas depart from the bus station at Savanxay Market to district centres. Bicycles and motorcycles can also be rented in Savannakhet Town for independent travellers.
