Though tourists are just beginning to discover Bolikhamxay’s natural and cultural bounty, the province is easy to access, and an adequate local transport system offers several ways to get around. Accommodation is readily available in all price ranges.
From Vientiane Capital’s Southern Bus Terminal, local, VIP, and express busses, as well as sawng taews (Pickup trucks with benches) depart for Pakxan, Bolikhamxay’s provincial capital, every 30 minutes, starting in the early morning through late afternoon. The 150-km ride costs between LAK60,000-80,000. Busses from Vientiane to Lak Xao leave between 05:00-07:00 every day and cost LAK120,000. One bus leaves Vientiane daily at 09:00 for Viengthong District. Busses to Pakxan are also available from Thakaek and Xieng Khouang.
Sawng taews travel between Bolikhamxay’s district capitals throughout the day. Some sawng taew drivers can be hired for those who want to visit specific attractions. Prices are negotiable. A few local busses stop in district stations, mostly in the morning and late afternoon.
Motorbike and bicycle rentals are not available in Bolikhamxay, though some visitors hire motorbikes in Thakaek. Pakxan’s two tour operators offer a variety of itineraries throughout the province. Vientiane travel agents also arrange Bolikhamxay transportation and tours.
Bolikhamxay has 32 hotels, two resorts, and more than 80 guesthouses. Prices range from $10-200 per night to suit all travellers. Most of Bolikhamxay’s accommodation is in Pakxan, though rooms are available throughout the province. Pak Kading offers hotels and guesthouses, as does Lak Xao near Vietnam, Ban Nahin on Route 8, Bolikhan, Khamkeuth, and Thaphabath.
Bolikhamxay has close to 100 restaurants throughout the province, though most serve local dishes. Staples include sticky rice with fish, buffalo and cow meat, pork, poultry, and herbs and vegetables, which are often picked in the forests. The dishes are always freshly prepared and usually accompanied by a spicy dip.
