Mountain biking around Laos will leave you breathless in more ways than one. Challenge yourself on mountain trails that few bikers have tackled. Follow paths through dense forests to remote villages, and meet the locals. Bikers of all ages can spend a day inspecting the outskirts of towns, while the fit can head out on multi-province circuits for weeks. Along the way, you’ll cut through farmers’ fields, rumble through primal forests, climb and coast over rugged mountains, and overnight in places unknown by most.
You can pedal with a guide on an organized tour, or head off on your own adventure. Take a rough ride or an easy trail. Ride your bike from Vietnam, Thailand, and Cambodia, or rent a solid cycle from a Lao bike shop. Overnight in hotels and guesthouses, or sleep in a village along the trail. Explore Laos, the Last Frontier, by mountain bike, and grab a memory at every turn.
Northern Laos Mountain Biking
Dive into the terrain around Luang Prabang, and then bike through Oudomxay’s rugged landscape to Luang Namtha, the Adventure Capital of Laos. Tackle the Northern Heritage Route with a mix of roads and trails. Head east from Luang Prabang to Houaphanh and Cave City, south to Xieng Khouang and the Plain of Jars, and back to the UNESCO city on a 2-week, adventure-packed journey.
A self-guided mountain bike tour is the way to go in Central Laos. Follow the Khammouane Loop, and head off-road on Cave Alley, around the Nakai Plateau, and into the Limestone Forest. Mountain bikes are made for taking on the Savannakhet Historic Trail. You can reach dozens of nature and culture sites on a path, while the main road climbs the mountains towards Vietnam.
Southern Laos Mountain Biking
Southern Laos is loaded with Mountain Biking options. Looking for a nice ride in nature? You can pedal along easy Mekong riverside trails to heritage sites and experience life in the 4,000 Islands. Or, pick a path criss-crossing coffee plantations on the Bolaven Plateau. Thrill-seeking bikers can reach rarely visited waterfalls in Attapeu and unique ethnic villages in the Salavan highlands.
