Meet Luang Prabang on The Mekong

Luang Prabang sits at the confluence of the Mekong and Nam Khan Rivers, and is the busiest passenger cruise port in Laos. Thousands of travellers take the 2-day cruise between Houay Xay and the UNESCO World Heritage every year, and a growing number of cruise lines call on the port during multiday voyages connecting Vientiane and the Golden Triangle.

Landings on Luang Prabang’s Mekong banks include concrete stairs, roadways, and floating platforms. Most Houay Xay cruises land 6 km from town at concrete steps rising from the river to a dirt road and ride into town. Day cruises and large cruise lines dock their vessels at the tourist area’s landing.

The city’s Mekong bank was recently renovated to offer more appealing eateries overlooking the river. The top Mekong river-based activity is the cruise to Pak Ou Caves with stops at other attractions. Public boats and private vessels offer this voyage every day. Several cruise operators with a choice of boats and a range of on-board services offer programs and charters to riverside attractions. Dinner and sunset cruises are also available.

On shore, passengers will find all levels of accommodation, and dozens of cultural, historical, and natural attractions and activities. Among the most popular are cycling around town, inspecting Luang Prabang temples and museums, soaking in Kuang Si Waterfalls, and shopping at the Night Market. The tourism slate also shows nature parks, kayaking, trekking, and motocross adventures.
