Houaphanh Accommodation

Most of the province’s 10 hotels and almost 60 guesthouses are clustered close to Xam Neua’s sites, the Nam Xam River, and the airport, though rooms are available closer to the caves. Homestays and village lodges are available at trekking and excursion destinations.

You can find 2-3-star hotel rooms for $25-50, though lower-end establishments lack some electronic and dining comforts. The better guesthouses run between $10-20. Most establishments are quite new, and provide basic rooms with clean bathrooms with Western toilets and hot water showers. Many have views of the town and surrounding countryside, with several rooms opening to balconies and terraces.

Access to Wi-Fi varies, so it’s best to check before booking. Almost all rooms have satellite TVs, though not all have air conditioning. Less expensive fan rooms are often all that’s required in the generally cool climate. Some hotels have restaurants, and lobbies often offer beverages. Several guesthouses provide complimentary coffee in their lobbies. A handful of establishments have staff who speak some English.
