Immerse yourself in a rice farmer’s life at Living Land, a nine-family community located just outside of Luang Prabang amidst rice fields and mountains. With rice being planted all year round, you’ll find plenty to learn and do, including bamboo weaving, blacksmithing, and trying to plough behind Rodolphe and Susan, Living Land’s two buffaloes. The community also grows organic vegetables and flowers. Join a half-day program (8.30 or 14.00) that ends with a rice-based snack. Have a lunch of traditional local dishes at the Lookout Terrace. Overnights are available in an old granary. Booking is required, and transportation by tuk tuk can be provided. Proceeds support education.

Textile traditions come alive at the Living Crafts Centre located in a lush garden on Luang Prabang’s Mekong Riverbank. Guests can enjoy a free tour and learn about the process of making Lao textiles, from the silk worm to the finished product. Meet the weavers and watch the masters at work. The Lamphet family offers half-day Pottery House Lao Food Tours in Luang Prabang’s Chan Nua Village that has been working with clay for 400 years. Local English-speaking guides lead the laid-back experience that begins with a 90-minute tour of the village pottery center, while learning about traditional Lao life. Next comes an hour-long demonstration of pottery techniques, followed by a hands-on opportunity to throw a pot. The tour ends with a traditional meal including fried river weed, grilled fish, eggplant sauce, and papaya salad. Tours kick off at 08:30 and 13:30 with a hotel pick up.
