Meet Savannakhet on The Mekong

Explore this once-great French colonial transport hub on the Mekong. Soak in the riverside atmosphere or jump into nearby activities.

Meet Savannakhet on The Mekong

Savannakhet sits less than 130 km downriver from Thakaek, and the once-prominent French colonial port now serves modest cross-Mekong local ferry traffic to Mukdahan, as a bridge presents easier access. No cruise ships stop here, and there are no dinner/sunset cruises or river-based activities. You can find relaxing dining under the shade of Mekong Riverbank trees and watch river life float by.

Savannakhet Town offers a choice of one-day tours.

•           “Savannakhet Downtown” passes nearly 20 colonial-era structures.

•           “Savannakhet Outskirts” visits ancient That Ing Hang Stupa, lakes, and ancient city ruins.

•           “Champhone Circuit” goes to a palm-leaf library, monkey-filled forest, and Turtle Lake.

•           “Mekong River South” presents a sacred stupa, weaving villages, and ancient Khmer rest house.
